Smith’s Machine and Grinding was founded in 1951 by Mr Frank Smith. Our primary business was specialty grinding (I.D., O.D. and Surface). As the years progressed we added general machining equipment that greatly expanded the types of work that we are capable of performing. In the early 1980’s we added our first CNC machine, a Mazak VQC 15/40 mill and shortly after a Mazak Slant Turn 4 axis turning center. We quickly out grew our original facility and in 1989 relocated to our current 37,000 sq/ ft. facility, in Galesburg Michigan. Our focus has changed from only offering grinding to also offering CNC milling and turning with grinding still an important part of our business. We are continually updating and adding new machinery to our vast machinery list so that we may try and fulfill our current and future customer’s requirements.

With a highly skilled workforce and years of experience in the latest technology in machine tooling and cad/cam, we serve the steel, automotive, paper mill and ship building industries, among others, offering in-house machining, welding & fabrication. We also provide powder and specialty coatings, anodizing, and material testing. We offer the customer a complete "one stop shop". We machine all types of material from plastics to super alloys such as Hastaloy and all metals in between. We are one of the few shops with the expertise to machine copper and its alloys. In fact, it has become one of our major avenues of machine work.

From Make Magazine: When Kevin Binkert moved into the old Standard Metal Products (SMP) building in San Francisco’s South-of-Market neighborhood in 1993, all that remained of the 1920s metal foundry was a metal plaque. In homage, Binkert revived the name and built out an atelier that melds the most modern CNC machines with traditional hand tools.
